Jerry Lee Rice was born October 13, 1962, in Starkville, Mississippi. Rice discovered football in high school when his quickness was brought to the attention of the school’s football coach, who put him in pads and had him line up as a receiver. He quickly caught on to the game and his talent was enough to attract a few college scouts. In the fall of 1981 Jerry Rice enrolled at Mississippi Valley State University. While professional scouts often viewed Rice’s impressive offensive numbers skeptically, it was impossible not to at least label him an intriguing prospect. Over his four-year college career, Rice hauled in 4,692 receiving yards and collected 18 Division I-AA records.

In the 1985 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Rice with the 16th overall pick. Jerry Rice is widely considered to be the greatest wide receiver in the history of the National Football League (NFL). Rice retired after a 20-year career with 38 NFL records to his name, including most career receptions (1,549), receiving yards (22,895) and touchdowns (197). He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010.
